Marina Lachecki, retired Madeline Island pastor, writer and environmental educator, will provide an historical view of the relationship between Protestant and Catholic missionaries with the Ojibwe from the 1830s to 1850s through their writing and records.

Reading and Discussion with Anton Treuer: His New Book for Young Adults, Where Wolves Don’t Die
Free and Open to the Public! All ages welcome.

This is an associated event to the Second Annual Capser Tribute.
Anton Treuer will read selections and discuss his new novel, Where Wolves Don’t Die (release date June 11, 2024). From acclaimed author Anton Treuer comes a novel that's both taut thriller and a raw, tender coming-of-age story, about one Ojibwe boy learning to love himself through the love of his family around him.

Installation and Dedication of the New Historic Marker at the Museum
Please join the Wisconsin Historical Society for a brief program followed by lunch as we dedicate a new historical marker at the Madeline Island Museum. As part of the 1854 Treaty Day commemoration activities on Mooningwaanikaaning, a new historical marker that shares the Anishinaabe migration story will be unveiled, and there will be remarks by Wisconsin Historical Society and Tribal leaders.
This is the first of two new markers. The second marker, to be installed next year, will continue the story of the history of the island.

Annual Meeting
A members only event.
Annual Meeting and Tour of the Madeline Island Historical Preservation Association (MIHPA) Site.
After a brief business meeting, we will take a tour of the site with MIHPA’s Cile Naumann and enjoy refreshments with members of the MIHPA board. The organization’s volunteers have mounted a superb photo exhibit in the shed and created quite a complex of historic island buildings.

Honoring the legacy of Bella and Leo Capser, founders of the Madeline Island Museum.
Social hour with locally-sourced appetizers from the Farmhouse follows the program.
Come to Learn: Noted historian Rick St. Germaine will share stories about “The Historic Relocation of the Ojibwe from Madeline Island”. Rick has this to say about his talk: “It is not as gloomy as the title may sound. It is actually a rather upbeat account of a migration of people away from the island.”

Our First Gathering
Meet at Ojibwe Memorial Park, next to the marina warming pond.
Paul DeMain will introduce us to the history and significance of the site and Jean Teisberg will review how it was saved from development for condos.
Pixie and Jay have kindly invited us to their place at 258 South Shore Road for light refreshments and a brief meeting afterwards
